Australia introduced new Student visa application rules on 2 October 2026. The changes affect who can apply for a Student visa while already in Australia and whether applicants can include family members in their applications.

For Pakistani students planning to study in Australia, understanding these changes before choosing a course, paying tuition fees or submitting a visa application is important.

This guide explains the main changes, who may be affected and what prospective students should check before applying.

What changed on 2 October 2026?

The Australian Government introduced changes to Student visa (subclass 500) and Student Guardian visa (subclass 590) applications.

The main changes concern:

  • Applying for a Student visa while inside Australia.

  • Applying for another Student visa while already holding one.

  • Including eligible family members in a Student visa application.

  • Planning a further application when a current visa is approaching expiry.

The changes do not automatically cancel existing Student visas. Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 continue to be assessed under the rules that applied when they were lodged.

1. Can Pakistani students still apply for an Australian Student visa?

Yes. Pakistani students can still explore an Australian Student visa if they meet the applicable requirements.

The new restrictions on applying from inside Australia are particularly relevant to people who are already in Australia on temporary visas and want to switch to a Student visa or apply for another Student visa.

From 2 October 2026, most temporary visa holders can no longer apply for a Student visa from within Australia. Current Student visa holders are also generally restricted from applying for another Student visa inside Australia unless they qualify for an exemption.

If an applicant must apply from outside Australia, they must also be outside Australia when the visa is granted.

What this means for applicants in Pakistan: If you are applying from Pakistan for your initial Student visa, the restrictions on lodging an application inside Australia are not the same issue you face. You should still check all current Student visa requirements, including enrolment, financial evidence, English-language evidence where required, health and character requirements, and the genuine-student assessment.

Always check the latest official requirements before making financial commitments.

2. Can Pakistani students include their spouse or children?

Family arrangements require particular attention under the new rules.

From 2 October 2026, Student visa applicants generally cannot include family members in their application unless a specified exemption applies. The published exemptions include certain doctoral students, nationals of Pacific countries and ASEAN countries, fully funded foreign government scholarship recipients, and students sponsored by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or Department of Defence.

Pakistan is not an ASEAN member or a Pacific country. Pakistani applicants should therefore not assume that an exemption applies to them. They should verify their individual circumstances against the current Australian Department of Home Affairs requirements.

The rules also state that family members cannot simply be added after a Student visa has been granted. There are no exemptions to that particular restriction in the published October 2026 guidance.

If you intend to study in Australia with your spouse or dependent children, check the applicable family-member rules before selecting a course or making payments.

3. What if you are already studying in Australia?

If you currently hold an Australian Student visa, the changes do not automatically invalidate your existing visa.

However, if you need another Student visa, you should check whether you qualify to apply from inside Australia. The published exemptions include certain students progressing to a higher-level course, doctoral students, school students, students whose education provider cannot deliver their course, and eligible students who need additional time to finish their studies with the same provider.

The precise conditions matter. Do not assume that changing your course, extending your studies or holding another temporary visa automatically makes you eligible to apply inside Australia.

If you do not qualify for an exemption, you may need to apply from outside Australia and remain outside Australia when the visa is granted.

4. What documents should Pakistani applicants prepare?

Your document requirements depend on your course and individual circumstances. Before lodging an application, check the current official checklist and prepare the documents relevant to your case.

These may include:

  • A valid passport and identity documents.

  • Confirmation of Enrolment for the intended course.

  • Evidence of financial capacity that meets the applicable requirements.

  • English-language evidence, where required.

  • Documents addressing the genuine-student requirement.

  • Health insurance and any required health or character documents.

  • Accurate information about family members and any relevant previous visa history.

Do not rely on a generic checklist alone. Requirements can differ according to the applicant, course and current rules.

5. What should you do before applying?

If you are planning to study in Australia, take these steps before committing money or submitting an application:

  1. Choose a course and education provider that match your academic background and study plans.

  2. Check the current Student visa requirements on the Australian Department of Home Affairs website.

  3. Confirm the financial and English-language evidence required for your circumstances.

  4. Review the new family-member rules if your spouse or children may accompany you.

  5. If you are already in Australia, verify whether you can apply from within the country or must apply offshore.

  6. Keep copies of your enrolment documents, financial evidence and application records.

Avoid making decisions based solely on social media posts or outdated advice. Immigration rules can change, and the correct approach depends on your circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Have Australian Student visas been cancelled because of the October 2026 changes?

No. The published guidance says the changes do not affect current Student visas automatically. They affect specified application situations and family-member arrangements.

Can I apply for my first Australian Student visa from Pakistan?

Pakistani applicants can still apply if they meet the applicable requirements. The new restrictions on applications lodged inside Australia should be distinguished from applications made from Pakistan.

Can I bring my spouse or children to Australia as dependants?

The new rules restrict the inclusion of family members, subject to specified exemptions. Pakistani applicants should check the current official rules before assuming that their family can be included.

Can I apply for another Student visa while in Australia?

Most applicants are restricted from doing so unless an exemption applies. Check the Department of Home Affairs guidance for the exact conditions.
