The UK immigration system has moved further toward a digital process, and UK eVisas are now an important part of how visa holders prove their immigration status.
For Pakistani applicants, this change is particularly relevant. Since 25 February 2026, Pakistani visitors who successfully obtain a UK visa can use an eVisa instead of receiving a traditional visa sticker in their passport. UKVI has also confirmed that, from 1 July 2026, successful new applicants are generally issued an eVisa only rather than a new visa vignette.
This means applicants and travellers need to understand how their UKVI account, eVisa and passport information work together before travelling.
What is a UK eVisa?
An eVisa is a digital record of your identity, UK immigration status and the conditions attached to that status.
Instead of relying on a physical visa sticker as the main evidence of permission, eligible visa holders can access their immigration status online through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.
An eVisa can show information such as the type of permission you have and whether you are permitted to work or study in the UK.
The eVisa itself does not change the immigration permission that has been granted to you. It is the digital way in which that status is recorded and accessed.
What changed for Pakistani UK visa applicants?
On 25 February 2026, the British High Commission in Islamabad announced that Pakistani visitors could use the UK's new eVisa system.
Successful applicants no longer need to return to a visa application centre simply to collect their passport after the visa decision. Instead, after completing the required application and biometric process, applicants can retain their passport while their immigration status is provided digitally through an eVisa.
UKVI later confirmed that from 1 July 2026, successful new applicants stopped receiving visa vignette stickers in their passports in most cases.
The underlying visa requirements, eligibility criteria and conditions of the visa have not changed simply because the visa is now issued digitally.
Do Pakistani applicants still need to apply for a UK visa?
Yes.
The introduction of eVisas does not mean that Pakistani nationals can travel to the UK without a visa when a visa is required.
Pakistan remains on the UK's list of nationalities whose citizens generally need a visa to enter or transit the UK.
The important change is how successful visa applications are recorded and how applicants prove their immigration status.
How do you access a UK eVisa?
You need a UKVI account to access your eVisa.
Depending on your circumstances, you may already have a UKVI account. For example, you may have created one during a previous visa application or used the UK Immigration: ID Check app.
If you already have an account, you should generally use that account rather than creating another one.
If you need to create an account, UKVI requires information such as an email address and phone number that you can use to sign in. You may also need your passport and relevant application information.
After setting up the account, you need to complete the required identity checks and link your eVisa to the account.
Your passport details are extremely important
One of the most important things to check before travelling is whether your current passport or travel document is correctly linked to your UKVI account.
Your eVisa is digital, but you still travel with your valid passport.
The information held by UKVI should match the information you provide to your airline or other carrier. If the details do not match, you could experience delays or problems when the carrier checks your immigration permission.
For this reason, Pakistani travellers should check their UKVI account well before their planned journey.
What should you check before travelling?
Before travelling to the UK, check:
Your name and personal details
Your current passport number
Your passport expiry information
That your current passport is linked to your UKVI account
That your eVisa shows the correct immigration status
That the conditions of your permission are correct
That the information matches the details provided to your airline
UKVI specifically advises travellers to check their eVisa and UKVI account before travelling.
What is a UK eVisa share code?
A share code can be used to prove your immigration status in certain circumstances.
For example, you may need to demonstrate your status to an employer, landlord or another organisation.
Travellers can also obtain a share code for travel if additional evidence of their immigration status is required by a carrier or border official.
A travel share code is currently valid for 90 days and can be used more than once during that period.
However, a share code does not replace the requirement to travel with your valid passport or travel document.
What happens if you get a new passport?
If you receive a new passport, do not assume that your UKVI information will automatically be correct.
You should check your UKVI account and update your passport information as required.
The passport you intend to use for travel should be added to your UKVI account so that your digital immigration status can be correctly checked.
This is particularly important for frequent travellers and anyone whose passport has recently expired or been replaced.
UK eVisa is not the same as ETA
A common source of confusion is the difference between an eVisa and an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
They are not the same thing.
An eVisa is generally connected to a person's UK immigration permission, such as a visa or other permission to stay in the UK.
An ETA is a digital travel authorisation for people who do not normally need a UK visa for the type of visit they are making.
Therefore, Pakistani nationals who require a UK visa should not assume that an ETA can replace that visa.
Does the eVisa change UK visa processing or eligibility?
The move to eVisas is primarily a change in how immigration status is recorded and accessed.
It does not automatically make someone eligible for a UK visa, and it does not remove the normal assessment of an application.
Applicants still need to meet the relevant requirements for the visa category they are applying for.
For example, a visitor needs to satisfy the requirements applicable to a Standard Visitor visa, while applicants for work, study or family routes must meet the requirements of their specific immigration route.
Common mistakes applicants should avoid
1. Creating multiple UKVI accounts
If you already have a UKVI account, creating another account can cause unnecessary confusion.
Check whether you already have an account before creating a new one.
2. Forgetting to update passport information
A new passport should not be treated as a minor detail. Your travel document information needs to be correct in your UKVI account.
3. Checking the eVisa only at the airport
Do not wait until the day of travel to discover that your eVisa cannot be accessed or your passport information is incorrect.
Check everything before your journey.
4. Confusing an eVisa with an ETA
An eVisa and an ETA serve different purposes. Always check which type of UK permission applies to your circumstances.
5. Assuming a digital visa means the visa requirements have disappeared
The digital format does not remove the underlying immigration requirements. Applicants still need to provide the information and evidence required for their particular visa route.
A practical UK eVisa checklist for Pakistani travellers
Before travelling, consider completing this checklist:
UKVI account:
☐ I can successfully sign in to my UKVI account.
eVisa:
☐ I can view my eVisa.
☐ My immigration status and conditions appear correct.
Passport:
☐ I am travelling with the passport linked to my UKVI account.
☐ My passport information is correct.
Airline:
☐ My passenger information matches my passport and UKVI details.
Evidence:
☐ I know how to obtain a travel share code if I need one.
Travel:
☐ I have checked my immigration status before travelling rather than waiting until the airport.
Final thoughts
The UK's move to eVisas represents an important change in the way immigration status is recorded and checked.
For Pakistani applicants, understanding the new system is particularly important because successful UK visa applicants are now generally issued digital immigration status rather than a new visa sticker.
The key message is simple: your eVisa is digital, but your travel documents still matter.
Before travelling, make sure your UKVI account is accessible, your eVisa information is correct, and your current passport is properly linked to your account.
For applicants planning to apply for a UK visa, it is also important to understand the requirements of the specific visa route before submitting an application.
