Pakistani students planning to study in the United Kingdom should understand an important change to the UK Graduate visa route. From 1 January 2027, the period of permission granted to most eligible graduates will be reduced from two years to 18 months. Eligible graduates with a PhD or another doctoral qualification will continue to receive three years.

The Graduate visa allows eligible international students to remain in the UK after successfully completing an eligible course, giving them time to work, look for employment or gain professional experience without requiring employer sponsorship for this visa itself.

For Pakistani students preparing for UK university admission, completing a degree or planning their post-study career, understanding the new rules can help with financial and career decisions.

In this guide, MSD Consultant Pakistan explains the Graduate visa changes, eligibility requirements, application process, costs and important points students should consider before applying.

1. What Is the UK Graduate Visa?

The UK Graduate visa is a post-study immigration route for eligible international students who have successfully completed an eligible qualification in the UK while holding permission under the Student route or the former Tier 4 (General) Student route.

It allows successful applicants to remain in the UK for a limited period after their studies. During this period, they can generally work in most jobs, search for employment, undertake eligible voluntary work or become self-employed, subject to the visa conditions.

Unlike the Skilled Worker route, the Graduate visa does not require an applicant to be sponsored by an employer.

However, the Graduate visa is temporary. It cannot be extended, and it does not itself provide a direct route to settlement. Graduates who wish to remain in the UK longer must explore another immigration route for which they qualify.

2. UK Graduate Visa Changes From January 2027

The UK government has confirmed that the Graduate visa duration will change for applications made on or after 1 January 2027.

The following table summarises the main change.

Application date and qualification Graduate visa duration Eligible bachelor's, master's or other qualifying graduates applying on or before 31 December 20262 yearsEligible bachelor's, master's or other qualifying graduates applying on or after 1 January 2027 18 months Eligible PhD or other doctoral graduates3 years

These periods apply only where the applicant meets the relevant eligibility requirements and the application is successful.

Why does the application date matter?

The date on which you submit your application is particularly important. A student graduating in late 2026 should not assume that they will automatically receive two years if they apply in 2027.

For example, if an eligible master's graduate applies on 20 December 2026, the applicable duration is generally two years. If an otherwise eligible master's graduate applies on 5 January 2027, the applicable duration is generally 18 months.

These are illustrations of the published rules, not guarantees of eligibility. Students must also ensure that their education provider has notified the Home Office of successful course completion and that they meet all other requirements.

Before making a decision, check the latest official guidance on GOV.UK.

3. Who Can Apply for a UK Graduate Visa?

Pakistani nationals can apply if they meet the same applicable immigration requirements as other eligible international students.

Generally, an applicant must:

  • Be physically present in the UK when applying.

  • Hold a current Student visa or eligible Tier 4 (General) student permission.

  • Have successfully completed an eligible course in the UK.

  • Have studied with an eligible education provider that meets the sponsorship requirements.

  • Have their education provider notify the Home Office that the course has been successfully completed.

  • Meet the relevant study-duration, identity, application and immigration requirements.

A UK bachelor's degree, master's degree or doctoral qualification may qualify. Certain other qualifications, including eligible law and education qualifications, may also qualify under the Immigration Rules.

Eligibility depends on the precise course, the student's immigration history and the applicable rules. Admission to a UK university alone does not guarantee eligibility for a Graduate visa.

4. Can Pakistani Students Apply After Completing a Master's Degree?

Yes, an eligible Pakistani student who successfully completes a qualifying master's degree at an eligible UK institution may apply for a Graduate visa, provided all the requirements are met.

For students whose courses are longer than 12 months, the usual UK study requirement is at least 12 months of study in the UK under the relevant Student permission. For courses lasting 12 months or less, the usual requirement is the full course duration.

Students should also confirm that their university has formally reported successful course completion to the Home Office.

You do not necessarily need to wait for your graduation ceremony or physical degree certificate. You must, however, wait until your university has notified the Home Office that you have successfully completed your course.

5. How Much Does the UK Graduate Visa Cost?

Applicants should budget for both the visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).

According to the published GOV.UK guidance available on 23 October 2026:

Expense Published amount Graduate visa application fee £937 Immigration Health Surcharge for an 18-month visa £1,152.50 Immigration Health Surcharge for a 2-year visa £2,070 Immigration Health Surcharge for a 3-year visa £3,105

For an eligible applicant receiving an 18-month visa, the combined application fee and healthcare surcharge would therefore be £2,089.50 at these published rates.

These amounts exclude other possible expenses, such as document preparation, currency conversion or professional advice. Fees may change, so applicants should verify the latest charges on the official UK government website before submitting an application.

Important: The Immigration Health Surcharge is calculated according to the applicable rules and visa duration. Do not rely on an old estimate when planning your budget.

6. How to Apply for a UK Graduate Visa

The Graduate visa application is completed online from within the UK. Students should plan the process carefully to avoid problems with their existing immigration permission.

Step 1: Confirm that your course is eligible

Check that your qualification and education provider satisfy the Graduate route requirements. If you are unsure, contact your university's international student office.

Step 2: Confirm that your university has reported your completion

Your university or eligible education provider must notify the Home Office that you have successfully completed your course. Ask your university when this notification has been made.

Step 3: Check your Student visa expiry date

You must apply before your current Student or eligible Tier 4 permission expires. Do not leave the application until the last minute.

Step 4: Prepare your identity information

Follow the online instructions for proving your identity. Depending on your circumstances and documents, you may be able to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app or may need to attend an appointment.

Step 5: Complete the online application

Use the official GOV.UK Graduate visa application service. Supply the requested information and documents and pay the applicable application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.

Step 6: Wait for the decision

The published guidance states that a decision usually takes around eight weeks after you have applied, proved your identity and provided the required information. Individual cases may take longer.

If you apply before your current permission expires, you can generally remain in the UK while your application is being considered, subject to the applicable immigration rules.

Travel warning: Do not travel outside the Common Travel Area while waiting for a decision. Under the published application guidance, travelling outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man before a decision can result in your application being treated as withdrawn.

7. Can You Work in the UK on a Graduate Visa?

Successful Graduate visa holders can generally:

  • Work in most jobs.

  • Search for suitable employment.

  • Change employers without needing a new Graduate visa sponsorship arrangement.

  • Become self-employed.

  • Undertake eligible voluntary work.

  • Continue living in the UK with eligible dependants, where the dependant rules allow.

There are restrictions. For example, Graduate visa holders cannot work as professional sportspersons and cannot generally access public funds.

Students planning a professional career should check whether their intended occupation has additional regulatory or licensing requirements.

8. Can You Switch From a Graduate Visa to a Skilled Worker Visa?

An eligible Graduate visa holder may be able to switch to a Skilled Worker visa if they meet the relevant requirements.

This normally involves securing an eligible job with an employer authorised to sponsor Skilled Workers, meeting the applicable salary and occupation requirements, and satisfying the other immigration conditions in force at the time of application.

A Graduate visa does not guarantee a Skilled Worker visa. Students should research potential employers and career pathways well before their Graduate permission expires.

Other immigration routes may be available depending on individual circumstances, but each has its own eligibility criteria.

9. What Should Pakistani Students Do Before Applying?

Pakistani students planning to study or work in the UK should consider the following practical steps:

Plan your finances. Include tuition fees, living costs, visa expenses and the possibility of paying for a shorter post-study period. Use our Visa Fee Calculator to estimate relevant visa costs before making your plans.

Research your career options early. Identify industries and employers that may offer suitable graduate-level employment and, where needed, Skilled Worker sponsorship.

Keep your university informed. Check course completion reporting and your Student visa expiry date with your institution.

Avoid relying on informal advice. Immigration rules can change. Confirm important decisions using official government sources or seek advice from a suitably qualified immigration professional.

Do not assume that graduating before January 2027 guarantees a two-year visa. Your application date and eligibility are critical.

For students who have not yet selected a university, the new duration should form part of their wider study and career planning. A UK qualification may provide valuable opportunities, but no visa or employment outcome should be treated as guaranteed.

10. Frequently Asked Questions

Will the UK Graduate visa become 18 months in 2027?

Yes. For eligible graduates with bachelor's, master's and other qualifying non-doctoral qualifications, the duration will be 18 months for applications made on or after 1 January 2027. Eligible doctoral graduates will continue to receive three years.

Can Pakistani students apply for a UK Graduate visa?

Yes. Pakistani nationality does not itself prevent an applicant from qualifying. Applicants must meet the Student route, course, study, sponsor notification and other applicable requirements.

Can I apply for a Graduate visa from Pakistan?

No. You must be in the UK when applying. The Graduate route is intended for eligible students who have completed their studies in the UK.

Do I need a job offer to apply?

No. A job offer or employer sponsorship is not generally required for the Graduate visa itself. However, you must meet all Graduate route eligibility requirements.

Can I extend my Graduate visa?

No. The Graduate visa cannot be extended. If you wish to remain in the UK after it expires, you must qualify for another immigration route.

Does a Graduate visa lead directly to permanent settlement?

No. The Graduate route is not itself a settlement route. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to switch to another eligible route, but you must meet that route's requirements.

Should I apply in December 2026 or January 2027?

The applicable visa duration depends on the date you apply, provided you meet all the eligibility requirements. Although the published rules distinguish between applications made before 1 January 2027 and those made from that date, you should never submit an incomplete or ineligible application merely to meet a deadline. Seek qualified advice if your circumstances are complicated.

Final Thoughts

The UK Graduate visa remains an important post-study option for eligible international students, including Pakistani graduates. However, the reduction to 18 months for most qualifying graduates from 1 January 2027 makes early career planning more important.

Students should understand the rules before selecting a course, review our UK visa information for further guidance, monitor their Student visa expiry dates and explore realistic employment pathways.Need guidance on your UK study or immigration plans?
